Born on May 9, 2000, in Marshall, Minnesota, Trey Lance is an American football quarterback who currently plays for the San Francisco 49ers in the National Football League (NFL). He attended Marshall High School and was a three-sport athlete, excelling in football, basketball, and baseball. Lance was a two-time All-State selection, leading his team to a 9-0 undefeated season in his senior year. In 2018, he committed to North Dakota State University (NDSU), where he played college football for three seasons.
Lance played for the NDSU Bison from 2018 to 2020, where he quickly emerged as one of the most promising quarterbacks in college football. He was the starter for only one season, in 2019, leading the Bison to an undefeated national championship. In that season, Lance passed for 2,786 yards, threw 28 touchdown passes, and did not throw a single interception. He also rushed for 1,110 yards and 14 touchdowns, earning him the prestigious Walter Payton Award for the most outstanding offensive player in the Football Championship Subdivision (FCS). Despite playing only one full season, Lance was projected as a top pick in the 2021 NFL Draft.
In the 2021 NFL Draft, the San Francisco 49ers selected Lance with the third overall pick, making him one of the most promising quarterbacks in the league. He signed a four-year contract with the 49ers, worth $34 million, with a $22.1 million signing bonus. Lance made his NFL debut in Week 1 of the 2021 season, playing sporadically as a backup to Jimmy Garoppolo.
