Wayne Fontes Autographs
Wayne Fontes is a former American football coach who is best known for his tenure as the head coach of the Detroit Lions. He was born in New Bedford, Massachusetts, in 1940, and grew up in the nearby town of Somerset. Fontes attended college at Boston University, where he played football as a defensive back. After graduation, he signed as a free agent with the Philadelphia Eagles, but his playing career was cut short by injury.
After his playing days were over, Fontes began coaching at the high school level in Massachusetts. He eventually moved to Florida, where he became the defensive coordinator at Miami Edison High School. From there, he moved up the ranks in the coaching profession, taking positions as an assistant coach at Mississippi State and Baylor, among other schools. Fontes finally got his big break in the NFL in 1985, when he was hired by the Detroit Lions as their defensive coordinator. He was promoted to head coach in 1988, and went on to lead the team for eight seasons. During his tenure, the Lions reached the playoffs four times, and Fontes was named NFL Coach of the Year in 1991. After leaving Detroit, he went on to coach for the New Orleans Saints and other teams before retiring from coaching in 2006.
Overall, Wayne Fontes had a successful career in American football, both as a player and as a coach. While he may not be a household name like some of the other greats in the game, Fontes is remembered by many as a skilled defensive strategist and a passionate coach who had a knack for getting the most out of his players. His legacy is perhaps most deeply felt in Detroit, where he helped lead the Lions to some of their greatest successes in recent memory.
