Whitney Mercilus was born on July 21, 1990, in Akron, Ohio, and although he is of Haitian descent, he is American born. Whitney attended Garfield High School, where he played multiple positions at linebacker and defensive end. In his senior year, Mercilus excelled in his position as the team's defensive end, recording 15 sacks and 22 tackles for loss.
Whitney Mercilus rapidly became one of the top defensive prospects in Ohio, receiving offers from many colleges, but he eventually committed to the University of Illinois. During his time with the Fighting Illini, Mercilus set a school record of 16 sacks during his junior season, earning him a plethora of awards, including the First-Team All-American, Ted Hendricks Award, and Big Ten Defensive Player of the Year. As a result of his impressive college career, Mercilus was selected by the Houston Texans with the 26th overall pick in the 2012 NFL Draft.
In the NFL, Whitney Mercilus has further established himself as one of the league's top pass rushers. Mercilus has spent his entire career with the Houston Texans, playing primarily as an outside linebacker, but full credit goes to him for his dominant plays in defensive end. He has consistently racked up sack numbers, and at the end of the 2015 season, he had amassed a career-high of 12 sacks with eight tackles for loss. Whitney's football career is one to be admired, and his remarkable achievements will forever be remembered as one of the highlights of his career.
