Charles is best known for his successful career as a professional golfer. His defining moment came in 1963 when he won the British Open, becoming the first left-handed golfer to win a major championship. He competed in all four major championships during his career and finished in the top ten multiple times. Charles was also a skilled putter and was known for using a cross-handed grip, which became popular among fellow golfers.

Despite suffering from arthritis in his hands, Charles continued to have a successful career and was inducted into the World Golf Hall of Fame in 2008. He remains an influential figure in golf, not just for his achievements on the course but also for his contributions to the sport off the course. Today, he is remembered as one of the greatest New Zealand golfers of all time.
