Jim began his golf career while studying at Kansas State University, where he won the Big Eight Championship three times. Jim Colbert's most significant success in golf came between the mid-1970s and the mid-1980s when he won numerous tournaments. In 1978, he won the Vardon Trophy, awarded to the player with the best scoring average over the season. He also won the Byron Nelson Award, given to the golfer who had the lowest adjusted scoring average over 50 rounds. Jim had twenty victories on the PGA Tour, including the prestigious Los Angeles Open twice in 1976 and 1978.
