Arthur Conan Doyle was a Scottish author best known for his creation of the iconic detective, Sherlock Holmes. However, his career extended beyond writing mystery novels. In 1899, during the Boer War, Doyle served as a doctor in a field hospital, and his experience there inspired him to write his first historical novel, The Great Boer War. Doyle's fascination with history continued, and he went on to write a number of historical adventure novels, including The White Company and Sir Nigel.
