In 1929, Tombaugh was hired by the Lowell Observatory in Flagstaff, Arizona, to help search for a ninth planet that was believed to exist in our solar system. Tombaugh spent countless hours scanning photographic plates using a blink comparator, a device that enables a viewer to rapidly switch between two images of the same area of the sky taken at different times. On February 18th, 1930, Tombaugh discovered a small, faint object that was later confirmed to be Pluto. This discovery made Tombaugh famous and earned him awards and recognition from around the world. Tombaugh continued his work at the Lowell Observatory for several years, and he also conducted research at several other institutions, including New Mexico State University and the White Sands Missile Range.

In addition to his discovery of Pluto, Tombaugh also made important contributions to our understanding of the outer solar system. He conducted studies of Mars, Jupiter, and other planets, and he developed new methods for measuring distance and brightness of celestial objects. Tombaugh was a veteran of the United States Army, and he also served as a science educator, sharing his passion for astronomy with countless students and the general public.
