George Mendonsa Autograph
George Mendonsa was a World War II veteran who gained national attention for his iconic kiss in Times Square on August 14, 1945, after Japan’s surrender to the Allied powers. Born in Newport, Rhode Island in 1923, Mendonsa joined the US Navy in 1942 and was assigned to the destroyer USS The Sullivans. He served in the Pacific theater during the war and participated in several major battles, including the invasion of Guam and Okinawa. As a naval serviceman, Mendonsa was decorated with several awards and citations for his brave and meritorious service. Among his military honors were the Asiatic-Pacific Campaign Medal, the World War II Victory Medal, and the Navy Occupation Service Medal with Asia Clasp. He also received a Letter of Commendation for his efforts to rescue a drowning comrade during a typhoon while aboard The Sullivans. Mendonsa’s devotion to duty and his selfless sacrifices in defense of his country exemplified the highest traditions of the US Navy.
After leaving the military, Mendonsa worked as a commercial fisherman and then as a milkman for more than 20 years. He remained a proud patriot and a beloved figure in his hometown of Newport, where he was known for his outgoing personality and his love for dancing. Mendonsa passed away on February 17, 2019, at the age of 95, leaving a legacy of heroism and gallantry that will always be remembered by his fellow veterans and the American public.
