George Opdyke Autographs

George Opdyke was a notable American politician, best known for his tenure as the 76th Mayor of New York City from 1862 to 1863. Born on December 7, 1805, in Rahway, New Jersey, Opdyke was an astute businessman with a history of involvement in banking and finance. In 1854, he became a member of the Republican Party, founded that same year, and quickly rose through the ranks within the party.
Opdyke's political career began with his election to the New York State Assembly in 1859. He used this platform to champion the construction of the Erie Canal and rural education reform, as well as becoming a vocal opponent of the Democratic Tammany Hall machine. His efforts gained him recognition and made him a rising figure within the Republican Party. Two years later, he ran against Democratic opponent Fernando Wood for the mayoralty of New York City and won, becoming the first Republican to hold the position. During his tenure, Opdyke was a staunch defender of the Union cause in the American Civil War, and he played a critical role in organizing the defense of the city against potential Confederate attacks. He also helped to create the city's first police force, a critical move that helped ensure the safety and security of citizens during a time of great uncertainty and unrest.
Despite being only a one-term mayor, George Opdyke's contributions to the Republican Party and his commitment to the Union cause made him a notable figure in American politics. In addition to his time as mayor, he also served as a New York City alderman, a member of the state's Board of Education, and as a delegate to the Republican National Convention in 1860 that nominated Abraham Lincoln for president. Throughout his career, Opdyke remained committed to advancing the interests of the Republican Party and promoting the values of the Union cause, cementing his legacy as one of the great politicians of the 19th century.
