Grover Cleveland was born on March 18, 1837, in Caldwell, New Jersey. He was the fifth of nine children and grew up in a Presbyterian family. After studying law, he started his political career by working as an assistant district attorney in Buffalo, New York, in 1863. In 1881, he became the mayor of Buffalo and, within two years, the governor of New York.
Cleveland's political career took a significant turn in 1884 when he became the 22nd President of the United States. He was the first Democrat to hold the position in 28 years. Cleveland's presidency was marked by several notable accomplishments. He championed civil service reform, which helped to eliminate corruption in the federal government. He also vetoed more than 400 bills during his presidency, earning him the nickname "Veto President." Perhaps most notably, Cleveland was known for his commitment to fiscal responsibility: he was the only President to serve two non-consecutive terms, and his second term was marked by a significant reduction in the national debt.
After leaving the White House in 1897, Cleveland remained active in politics, both as a supporter of the Democratic Party and as a commentator on public affairs. He died on June 24, 1908, at his home in Princeton, New Jersey, at the age of 71. Today, Grover Cleveland is widely regarded as one of America's greatest Presidents, known for his integrity, his commitment to public service, and his unwavering dedication to the well-being of the American people.
