John Burroughs Autographs

John Burroughs (1837-1921) was an American essayist and naturalist who wrote extensively about the natural world. Born in the Catskill Mountains of New York, Burroughs spent much of his early life working on the family farm and attending school. In 1854, he left home to work as a schoolteacher and later as a clerk in Washington, D.C. During the Civil War, Burroughs worked as a government clerk and became friends with Walt Whitman, who encouraged him to pursue a writing career.
Burroughs’ literary career took off in the early 1870s, when his essays on nature began appearing in magazines like Atlantic Monthly and Scribner's Monthly. He went on to publish several books, including Wake Robin (1871), Winter Sunshine (1875), and Birds and Poets (1877). His writing was celebrated for its simple, vivid prose and its focus on the natural world. Burroughs was also a popular lecturer and gave talks about nature and literature in various cities throughout the United States.
In addition to his literary career, Burroughs was involved in several important historical and cultural events. In 1893, he was one of the founding members of the Audubon Society, which aimed to protect birds and their habitats. He also corresponded with a number of leading figures in the arts and sciences, including Walt Whitman, Thomas Edison, and Theodore Roosevelt. Burroughs’ work continues to be celebrated today for its blend of scientific inquiry, literary craftsmanship, and love of the natural world.
