Joseph Allen Autograph
Joseph Allen is an American astronaut, born on June 27, 1937, in Crawfordsville, Indiana. After receiving a Bachelor of Arts degree in Engineering Science from DePauw University in 1959, Allen was granted a commission into the U.S. Navy as an ensign. He served on board the USS Ticonderoga for two years and then entered MIT, earning a Master of Science degree in 1961 and a Doctor of Philosophy degree in 1965. Allen's first space mission was in 1982 as a mission specialist aboard STS-5. He flew again in 1984 as a mission specialist aboard STS 51-A. During both flights, he carried out several experiments testing the effects of weightlessness on humans and animals. He also performed two spacewalks, spending a total of just over 12 hours outside the spacecraft. Allen became the first astronaut to carry out a space rescue, using the Manned Maneuvering Unit to retrieve a malfunctioning satellite during STS 51-A.
Allen retired from NASA in 1985, having logged almost 312 hours in space, including 20 hours of extra-vehicular activity. After leaving NASA, Allen worked at the University of Southern California and served on several committees for the National Academy of Sciences. In recognition of his contributions to space exploration, he was inducted into the Astronaut Hall of Fame in 2005. Joseph Allen will always be remembered for his numerous contributions to space exploration and the development of new spaceflight technologies.
