Miep Gies Autograph

Miep Gies was a Dutch woman who was born on February 15, 1909, in Vienna, Austria. She is best known for her role in helping the Frank family and other Jews during the Nazi occupation of the Netherlands. Gies had moved to Amsterdam in the 1930s and began working for Otto Frank, the father of Anne Frank, at his company. When the Nazis invaded the Netherlands in 1940, Gies, along with other employees, helped to hide the Frank family and four other Jewish individuals in a secret annex behind the office building. Gies risked her life by going out to buy food, supplies, and news for the hidden group. Her efforts lasted over two years until their discovery by German officials in August 1944. Sadly, all of the residents were arrested and sent to concentration camps, except for Otto Frank, who survived and returned to Amsterdam after the war. Gies found Anne Frank's diary and kept it safe, intending to return it to her when she returned to the annex. However, after Anne died in Bergen-Belsen, Gies gave the diary to Otto Frank.

Miep Gies continued to work for the Frank family after the war ended and was a champion of Anne's diary, helping to promote its publication and its message of hope and understanding. She received many awards and honors for her bravery, including being named a "Righteous Among the Nations" by the Israeli government. She died on January 11, 2010, at the age of 100, but her legacy lives on, with her story continuing to inspire those who seek to make a difference in the world.
