Tibbets led the 509th Composite Group, a specialized unit assigned to drop the atomic bombs over Japan in 1945. On August 6, 1945, he piloted the Enola Gay, a B-29 bomber, on its mission to drop the first atomic bomb on Hiroshima, Japan, killing approximately 140,000 people. Tibbets received the Distinguished Service Cross for his leadership and bravery during the mission. Despite facing criticism over the dropping of the bomb, Tibbets believed that it was necessary to bring about a swift end to the war and prevent further loss of American lives.

After the war, Tibbets continued to serve in the Air Force, becoming a brigadier general in 1959. He retired from active duty in 1966, but his name remained associated with the most significant event of his storied career. In later years, Tibbets's views on the atomic bombing and its legacy were often a topic of debate, with some criticizing him for his role in the event. However, to many, Tibbets was a symbol of American military prowess and a reminder of the sacrifices made by those who served their country during tumultuous times. He passed away in 2007, leaving behind a complicated legacy as one of the most well-known and controversial pilots in American military history.
