Peter Bradford Benchley was an American author, screenwriter, and ocean activist, born on May 8, 1940. He was famously known for his novel Jaws, which was made into a blockbuster movie in 1975. He had a successful career as a journalist before becoming a novelist. He went on to write several other books, including The Deep, The Beast, and White Shark, all of which received critical acclaim. Still, he could never recapture the literary success of Jaws, which sold millions of copies worldwide and transformed him into a household name.
Even though Benchley wrote several novels, he will always be remembered as the author of Jaws. The novel became a cultural phenomenon, creating widespread panic and fear of sharks among people. When Steven Spielberg adapted the book into a movie, Benchley worked on the script with him and made a cameo appearance in the film. The success of the film made Benchley a celebrity overnight, and he became the face of shark conservation around the world. Before Jaws, most people had a fascination with sharks, but after the movie release, people started fearing them. The author would spend the rest of his life trying to undo the unintended damage that he had caused.
After the release of Jaws, Benchley’s life changed forever. He became a beachgoers’ favorite speaker, lecturing on the dangers of the open ocean and the need for conservation. He used his influence as a celebrity to promote ocean ecology and became an outspoken advocate for diverse marine life. Benchley's dedication to shark conservation led him to collaborate with Discovery Channel for the Shark Week, which became one of the most popular and longest-running shows on the network. Despite his best efforts, he failed to shake off the fame of Jaws and passed away in 2006, leaving behind a legacy that would continue to inspire future generations.
