Adam Oates was born on August 27, 1962, in Weston, Ontario, Canada. He played hockey at Rensselaer Polytechnic Institute and got drafted 21st overall in the 1985 NHL Entry Draft by the Detroit Red Wings. He played for many teams in his NHL career, including the Detroit Red Wings, St. Louis Blues, Boston Bruins, and Washington Capitals. After he retired, Adam Oates became an assistant coach for the Tampa Bay Lightning and then went on to be an assistant coach and later head coach of the New Jersey Devils. He was inducted into the Hockey Hall of Fame in 2012 for his contributions to the game. In his speech, he gave credit to his teammates and coaches who helped him throughout his career. Oates was known for his excellent passing skills on the ice, and his skating and ability to read the game were vital to his success.
