He began his hockey career at the age of six and skated for several teams in the Ontario Minor Hockey Association before transferring to the Oshawa Generals of the Ontario Hockey League. During his time with the Generals, May proved to be an impressive player, scoring 110 goals and 127 assists over a two-year period.
In 1985, May was drafted by the National Hockey League's Buffalo Sabres and he made his professional debut with the team later that year. Over the course of his NHL career, May played for several teams including the Washington Capitals, Dallas Stars, and Calgary Flames.
