Alex Steen is a retired Swedish professional ice hockey player who played for the National Hockey League's (NHL) Toronto Maple Leafs and St. Louis Blues. Steen was born on March 1, 1984, in Winnipeg, Manitoba. Steen's professional career began in 2002 when he was drafted by the Toronto Maple Leafs in the first round. He joined the team two years later and played for Toronto for three seasons. In 2008, he was traded to the St. Louis Blues, where he flourished during his time in the team. During the 2013-2014 season, he played a significant role in leading St. Louis to the playoffs, scoring 33 goals and assisting on 29 others. Steen's hockey career highlights include the distinction of being the first Swedish-born player to play for the Toronto Maple Leafs, winning a silver medal at the 2014 Winter Olympics, and being named to the NHL All-Star team in 2017.

After playing for 15 seasons, Steen announced his retirement in December 2020. At the time of his retirement, Steen was well-respected around the league as a consistent two-way forward who put in the work every game. Steen was praised for his leadership skills, and he played a mentorship role for many younger players aimed at making them better.
