Alexei Yashin Autographs
Born on November 5, 1973, in Sverdlovsk, Russia, Alexei Yashin was a legend in the world of ice hockey. He started playing hockey at the age of six and was scouted by CSKA Moscow's legendary coach Viktor Tikhonov. He made his Russian Super League debut at the age of 16 for Dynamo Moscow and eventually won the league championship in 1992. He was drafted second overall by the Ottawa Senators in the 1992 NHL Entry Draft and was soon one of the league's top players.
Yashin spent the majority of his NHL career with the Ottawa Senators, where he became the team captain in 1998-99. He was a key player for the Senators, leading them to the playoffs in six of his ten seasons with the team. In 1999-2000, Yashin was named a finalist for both the Hart Memorial Trophy (NHL MVP) and the Lester B. Pearson Award (most outstanding player as voted by the NHLPA). After ten seasons in Ottawa, Yashin was traded to the New York Islanders in exchange for Zdeno Chara and Bill Muckalt.
Though his NHL career ended after the 2006-2007 season, Yashin continued playing hockey in Russia's Kontinental Hockey League. He also represented Russia in several international tournaments and won a gold medal at the 1993 World Junior Ice Hockey Championships. Throughout his career, Yashin was known for his skilled playmaking abilities, agility, and leadership on and off the ice. He retired from professional hockey in 2012 and returned to Russia, where he is now involved in philanthropic work and youth hockey development.
