He began his hockey career playing for the Timmins North Stars in the Northern Ontario Hockey Association. Stanley played for the New York Rangers from 1948 to 1955 and then played for the Boston Bruins from 1955 to 1958 before being traded to the Toronto Maple Leafs. It was with the Toronto Maple Leafs where Stanley had an impressive career that earned him the nickname "Snowshoes." He played as a defenseman for the Maple Leafs from 1958 to 1968 and won four Stanley Cup championships with the team.
