Bill Chadwick Autographs
Bill Chadwick was an American ice hockey player and referee, born on October 10, 1915, in New York City. He started playing hockey in his hometown of Brooklyn and soon became one of the best amateur players in the area. In 1939, after playing for several years in the minor leagues, Chadwick made his NHL debut with the New York Rangers. He quickly became known for his speed, agility, and excellent stick-handling skills. During his eight seasons with the Rangers, Chadwick scored 87 goals and 106 assists in 411 games.
After retiring from playing in 1947, Bill Chadwick turned his attention to refereeing. He became the first American-born referee in the NHL and was considered one of the best officials in the league for the next 26 years. Known for his fairness, integrity, and knowledge of the game, Chadwick officiated over 1,700 NHL games and was inducted into the Hockey Hall of Fame in 1964. He was also a pioneer of televised hockey, providing commentary on games for CBS and NBC from 1961 to 1981.
Outside of hockey, Chadwick was also a successful businessman and philanthropist. He owned several car dealerships in New York and was known for his charitable work in the community. After his retirement from refereeing, Bill Chadwick remained involved in the sport he loved, serving as a mentor to young players and working as an ambassador for the game until his death on October 24, 2009, at the age of 94. Today, he is remembered as one of the most influential figures in American hockey history.
