Bill Hay Autographs
Bill Hay was a Canadian professional ice hockey player, executive and administrator who was born on October 6, 1935, in Davidson, Saskatchewan. He moved to Prince Albert as a youngster and played there until he was fourteen. Later on, Hay enrolled in the University of British Columbia where he played for the Thunderbirds. He was an outstanding forward who had the potent blend of skill, grit, and toughness. He began his professional career in the 1957-1958 season with the Chicago Blackhawks. Hay played four seasons in the National Hockey League (NHL) with the Blackhawks and scored 64 goals and 111 assists in 311 games.
Hay's professional career as a hockey player was a remarkable one, but what set him apart from many of his peers was his administrative and executive roles. After retiring from playing professionally, Hay served as a coach and later as the general manager of the Calgary Centennials, a team in the Western Hockey League (WHL). He worked his way up and eventually joined the NHL head office, where he served as the vice-president of hockey operations in 1978. In 1991, Hay became the president of Hockey Canada, a role that he held for five years. He was also instrumental in establishing the Canadian Hockey Hall of Fame in 1972 and was inducted into it himself in 1999.
Overall, Bill Hay had an incredible hockey career in which he played, coached, managed and served as a top executive in hockey operations. His versatile background in the sport gave him a unique perspective that helped him rise in Canadian and North American hockey circles. Not only was Hay a successful hockey player, but he was also a standout executive who made significant contributions to the sport in Canada and beyond. Despite his passing in 2021, his legacy will live on, and his impact on hockey is well-documented and will never be forgotten.
