Bob Gainey Autographs
Bob Gainey is a former player-turned-coach who is widely regarded as one of the greatest defensive forwards in the history of ice hockey. Born on December 13, 1953, in Peterborough, Ontario, Canada, Gainey spent his entire NHL career playing for the Montreal Canadiens. He played as a left-wing and was a key player on the Canadiens teams that won the Stanley Cup in 1976, 1977, 1978, 1979, and 1986. Gainey won four Frank J. Selke Trophies for being the NHL's top defensive forward between 1978 and 1981.
Throughout his career, Gainey was renowned for his remarkable defensive abilities and his speed on the ice. He was the embodiment of the modern-day two-way forward, as he was as effective in his own end as he was in the opponent's end. Gainey was also known for his selflessness, leadership, and work ethic. He was a great captain, leading the Canadiens to victory in the 1986 playoffs, where they overcame the Boston Bruins in seven games, and Gainey scored two goals in the decisive game.
After retiring from playing, Bob Gainey continued to work in hockey as a general manager and coach. He served as the general manager for the Dallas Stars from 1992 to 2002, during which time he helped the team win the Stanley Cup in 1999. Gainey returned to coaching in 2005 when he was named head coach of the Canadiens. He led the team to the playoffs in each of his three seasons as the coach but was fired in 2009. Despite the setback, Gainey's contributions to the game of hockey are undeniable, and he is rightfully considered one of the greats of the sport.
