McCrimmon was renowned for his defensive skills and his readiness to block shots, which earned him the nickname "The Beast." His best season was in 1987-1988 when he played for the Flames and registered his career-best figures of 11 goals, 35 assists, and 46 points. His team won the Presidents' Trophy and advanced to the Stanley Cup Finals, a feat they would repeat in 1988-89. McCrimmon won his only Stanley Cup championship with the Red Wings in 1997, serving as an assistant coach for the team. He retired after that season, achieving 1,200 regular-season games, the seventh-most in league history by a defenseman.

McCrimmon put up remarkable numbers during his career, and he was admired by many players for his skills and toughness. In 2003, he returned to hockey as an assistant coach of the New York Islanders, then as a head coach of the Western Hockey League's Saskatoon Blades in 2004. McCrimmon worked as an assistant coach for the NHL's Atlanta Thrashers from 2008 to 2010. He then moved on to become an assistant coach under head coach Mike Babcock with the Detroit Red Wings. Despite significant success in the NHL, McCrimmon's life came to a tragic end in 2011 at the age of 52. While serving as the head coach of the Russian club Lokomotiv Yaroslavl in the Kontinental Hockey League, McCrimmon died in a plane crash along with the entire team, leaving behind a legacy that still lives in the minds of hockey fans worldwide.
