He was born on April 11, 1994, and grew up playing hockey in his hometown of Ohsweken, where he started his career in the Junior B level with the Six Nations Rebels. Montour honed his skills and made his way through the ranks, playing for various teams in junior and college hockey, including Waterloo Black Hawks in the United States Hockey League (USHL) and the University of Massachusetts Amherst.
In 2014, Montour was drafted by the Anaheim Ducks in the second round, 55th overall, and became a promising prospect for the team.
