Brock Nelson was born on October 15, 1991, in Warroad, Minnesota. He grew up playing hockey in his hometown and eventually joined the Warroad High School Warriors, where he played for four seasons. During his time with the Warriors, he led the team to two Minnesota state high school hockey tournaments and was named All-State twice. He then joined the University of North Dakota Fighting Hawks and played three seasons with the team. In his final collegiate season, he was named to the All-WCHA First Team and was a finalist for the Hobey Baker Award, given annually to the top collegiate hockey player in the United States. In 2010, Nelson was drafted by the New York Islanders in the first round, 30th overall, in the NHL Entry Draft. He spent five seasons in the Islanders organization, primarily with their AHL affiliate team, the Bridgeport Sound Tigers. He made his NHL debut in the 2013-2014 season and has since become a staple in the Islanders’ lineup. Nelson has been a consistent scorer for the team, tallying 20 or more goals in four of his seven full NHL seasons.
