Orpik's career began in 2001 when he was drafted in the first round, 18th overall, by the Pittsburgh Penguins. He played for the Penguins for ten seasons until 2014, where he won his first Stanley Cup in 2009. He then signed with the Washington Capitals where he continued to be an integral part of their defensive core until his retirement in 2019. In 2018, he won his second Stanley Cup with the Capitals.

Brooks Orpik's style of play was characterized by his physical presence and his ability to deliver hard hits, make solid defensive plays, and clear the puck out of his own end. He won Olympic silver medals playing for Team USA in the 2010 and 2014 Winter Olympics. He played a total of 1035 NHL games in his career, scoring 18 goals and 181 assists while racking up 972 penalty minutes.
