Bryan Berard Autographs
Bryan Berard was born on March 5, 1977, in Woonsocket, Rhode Island, and started playing hockey at a young age. He played his high school hockey at Mount Saint Charles Academy, where he was a standout defenseman. In 1995, he was selected first overall in the NHL Entry Draft by the Ottawa Senators but was soon traded to the New York Islanders.
Berard made a lasting impression in his rookie season, earning the Calder Trophy as the league's best rookie. He continued to be a dominant force on the ice throughout his career with the Islanders, the Toronto Maple Leafs, the Chicago Blackhawks, the Columbus Blue Jackets, and the New York Rangers. His offensive prowess, smooth skating, and tenacious defense made him one of the best defensemen in the league.
Berard's hockey career came to a devastating halt in March 2000 when he suffered a severe eye injury during a game against the Ottawa Senators. Doctors doubted if he would be able to play hockey again, but Berard made a remarkable comeback, wearing special eye protection and continuing to play professionally. Despite the injury, he continued to be a valuable asset to many teams throughout his career and retired after the 2007-2008 season. Berard's impressive career earned him a spot on Team USA for many international tournaments, including the 1998 Winter Olympics in Nagano, Japan.
