Trottier's NHL career was remarkable, as he spent half of it with the New York Islanders, where he played from 1975 to 1990. He was one of the key players of the Islanders' dynasty that won four consecutive Stanley Cups from 1980 to 1983. Trottier was a versatile player, capable of playing as a center or left wing, and he was known for his offensive and defensive skills. He scored 524 goals and 901 assists in his 18-year NHL career, making him one of the highest scoring players in NHL history.

After retiring from playing in 1994, Trottier turned his attention to coaching. He held several coaching positions in the NHL and AHL, including being an assistant coach for the Pittsburgh Penguins when they won the Stanley Cup in 1992 and 2009. He also coached the New York Rangers, the Colorado Avalanche, and the Buffalo Sabres. In addition to his coaching career, Trottier is also known for his philanthropic work, including the Bryan Trottier Foundation, which helps children in need.
