Neil began his hockey career with the North Bay Centennials in the Ontario Hockey League (OHL). After being drafted by the Ottawa Senators in the sixth round of the 1998 NHL Entry Draft, Neil joined the Senators' AHL affiliate, the Grand Rapids Griffins, for the 1999-2000 season. He made his NHL debut in 2001 and quickly made a name for himself as a rugged player who could also chip in offensively. In 2003-2004, Neil scored a career-high 16 goals, showing that he could do more than just fight and hit. Neil was a key player for the Senators in their run to the 2007 Stanley Cup Finals, where they lost to the Anaheim Ducks in five games. Though he retired from professional hockey in 2017, his career remains an inspiration to aspiring players and fans alike.

Off the ice, Neil was equally as passionate about his community as he was about hockey. Neil was the founder of the Chris Neil Foundation, which raised funds for a variety of charities, including The Ottawa Senators Foundation, Roger's House, and the CHEO Foundation. Neil utilized his status as a hockey player to give back to the community by hosting charity events and participating in events supporting local organizations. His commitment to both the game he loved and the community that nurtured his success have made him a beloved figure in the history of Ottawa Senators hockey.
