Chris Phillips was born on March 9, 1978, in Calgary, Alberta, Canada. He is a former professional ice hockey player who spent his entire NHL career with the Ottawa Senators. Phillips was an active player from 1996 to 2016 and amassed 1,179 regular-season games as a defenseman for the Senators. He was a shutdown defenseman known for his physicality, strength, and consistent play, and was often paired with Anton Volchenkov.
Phillips was a highly talented player in his junior years and was drafted first overall by the Senators in the 1996 NHL Entry Draft. He made his NHL debut in 1997 and started his career with an impressive performance, scoring the game-winning goal in his first NHL game. Phillips went on to become a cornerstone of the Senators' defense, playing in two All-Star games and helping the team reach the Stanley Cup Finals in 2007. He was also part of Canada's team at the 2002 and 2006 Winter Olympics.
Chris Phillips announced his retirement in 2016, ending a spectacular 20-year career in which he played 1,179 regular-season games for the Senators. He will always be remembered as one of the greatest players to don the Ottawa Senators' uniform, providing leadership, toughness, and stability to the team. Despite having never won a Stanley Cup, he achieved a great deal of success on the international level with Team Canada, earning a gold medal at the 2002 Winter Olympics and a World Championship in 2003.
