Chris Therien Autographs
Chris Therien was born on January 14, 1971, in Ottawa, Ontario, Canada. He started playing ice hockey at a young age and by the time he was 16, he was already playing with the Ottawa 67’s of the Ontario Hockey League (OHL). In the 1990 NHL Entry Draft, he was selected by the Philadelphia Flyers in the third round, making his NHL debut in 1991.
Therien spent fourteen seasons in the National Hockey League, playing for teams such as the Philadelphia Flyers, Dallas Stars and Pittsburgh Penguins. He mainly played as a defenseman known for his intense physicality, strong play along the boards, and reliable defensive skills. He was a valued member of the Philadelphia Flyers during their playoff runs in the late 1990s and early 2000s, making it to the Stanley Cup Finals in 1997.
Though Therien was never a high scorer, his reputation as a dependable defender earned him recognition over the years. He was considered one of the most respected defensemen of his time in the NHL. Described as a tough and steady player, Therien earned the nickname "Bambi" early in his career due to his lengthy legs, but he quickly shed that label and became known for his hard, aggressive style. After retiring from professional hockey in 2006, he transitioned into a successful career as a commentator, guiding new generations of players, and sharing his expertise with the audiences.
