Born on April 6, 1985, in Lloydminster, Saskatchewan, Canada, MacArthur began his hockey career playing for the Medicine Hat Tigers of the Western Hockey League (WHL). MacArthur made his NHL debut in the 2006-07 season with the Sabres, where he played for four seasons before joining the Atlanta Thrashers. In 2010, he signed a two-year contract with the Toronto Maple Leafs, where he had some of the best seasons of his career. MacArthur helped the Leafs qualify for the playoffs in 2013, where he scored the series-winning goal in game five against the Boston Bruins.

MacArthur's career was cut short due to concussions. He sustained four concussions throughout his career, and he was ultimately forced to retire in 2019 because of post-concussion symptoms.
