Dan Cleary is a Canadian former professional ice hockey player who was born on December 18, 1978, in Carbonear, Newfoundland, Canada. As a child, Cleary showed a deep passion for hockey and began playing at a young age. He played minor hockey for the Notre Dame Hounds in Wilcox, Saskatchewan, then moved on to the Portland Winterhawks of the Western Hockey League, where he played for two seasons.
