In 2010, he joined the Tampa Bay Lightning and took them to the Eastern Conference Finals, where they lost to the eventual champions, the Boston Bruins.

He retired in 2017, ending his career with a record of 86-81-18, 16 shutouts, and a 2.73 goals-against average. Ellis was known for his quick reflexes, excellent positioning, and calm demeanor on the ice. He remains one of the most underrated goaltenders in NHL history.
