Dave Schultz Autographs
Dave Schultz, born on October 14, 1949, was a Canadian professional ice hockey player who played primarily the position of the left-wing. He started his career in the Western Canada Hockey League (WCHL), playing for the Medicine Hat Tigers in the early 1970s. He then joined the Philadelphia Flyers in 1972, where he played for seven seasons. Schultz's aggressive and physical style of play earned him the nickname “The Hammer” and he was one of the most feared enforcers in the NHL.
Schultz's most successful years were with the Flyers, where he was a member of the Broad Street Bullies. He played a key role in the Flyers' two consecutive Stanley Cup victories in 1974 and 1975. In the 1973 playoffs, he set a record for most penalty minutes in a single postseason, and was named to the NHL All-Star team in 1976. Schultz was known for his fighting skills, and his notoriety was further built when he took on the Boston Bruins' John Wensink in a much-publicized brawl in 1978.
After leaving the Flyers, Schultz played for a few other teams, including the Los Angeles Kings and Buffalo Sabres. Ultimately, Schultz retired from professional hockey in 1980, with 298 points and 2,294 penalty minutes in 535 regular-season NHL games. Although Schultz's aggressive style of play was often criticized, he was admired by many for his dedication to his team and his ability to intimidate opponents. He remained involved in hockey as a coach and commentator after his playing days were over, and was inducted into the Flyers Hall of Fame in 2009.
