In 2003, Backes was selected by the St. Louis Blues in the second round of the NHL Draft. He started his NHL career with the Blues in the 2006-2007 season, and it didn't take long for him to become one of the team's most important players. Backes quickly became a fan favorite with his leadership, work ethic, and physicality, earning the nickname "Captain America" for his work with the US National Team. In 2011, the Blues appointed him captain, making him one of the youngest captains in franchise history.

Over his career, Backes played for the St. Louis Blues, Boston Bruins, and Anaheim Ducks, appearing in over 965 NHL games. He retired in December 2020 after 15 seasons, leaving an impressive legacy both on and off the ice. Throughout his career, Backes was known for his power forward play, his leadership qualities, and his ability to rise to the occasion in critical moments. He was a key part of many successful teams, including the Bruins' run to the Stanley Cup Finals in 2019, and he will be remembered as one of the toughest and most respected players of his generation.
