Potvin began his professional hockey career in 1973 when he was drafted first overall by the New York Islanders. He spent his entire career with the Islanders, where he became an integral part of the team's success in the late 1970s and early 1980s. Potvin was known for his strong defensive play and offensive skills, and he was the team captain for eight seasons. He helped lead the Islanders to four consecutive Stanley Cup championships from 1980 to 1983. Potvin retired from professional hockey in 1988, and his jersey number (5) was retired by the Islanders in 1992.

Potvin's success in the NHL did not go unnoticed, and he was awarded numerous accolades throughout his career. He was named to eight All-Star teams, won three Norris Trophies as the NHL's best defenseman, and became a member of the Hockey Hall of Fame in 1991.
