Wideman was drafted by the Buffalo Sabres in the eighth round of the 2002 NHL Entry Draft. He made his NHL debut in 2005 with the St. Louis Blues, where he played for three seasons before moving on to play for the Boston Bruins, Florida Panthers, Washington Capitals, and Calgary Flames. Wideman was known for his offensive capabilities as a defenseman and his powerful shot, which often resulted in him scoring goals from the blue line. He was also a solid, all-around defenseman and a leader in the locker room. Over the course of his NHL career, Wideman recorded 317 points in 815 regular-season games.

In addition to his NHL career, Wideman represented Canada in international competitions, suiting up for the Canadian National Team at the 2006 IIHF World Championships, and the 2007 and 2012 Spengler Cup tournaments. Despite having a successful career, Wideman encountered controversy when he was suspended for 20 games in 2016 after injuring a linesman. Following the suspension, Wideman decided to retire from professional hockey in 2018. Today, he serves as an assistant coach for the Kitchener Rangers, the team where he started his hockey journey.
