King's professional hockey career began when he was drafted by the New York Islanders as the 13th overall pick in the 1985 NHL Entry Draft. He played with the Islanders for six seasons and became a top scorer for the team before being traded to the Hartford Whalers in 1991. With his career experience in the NHL, King obtained opportunities to participate in international competitions.
