Edwards was born on September 28, 1955, in Hamilton, Ontario, Canada. He began his hockey career with the Kitchener Rangers of the Ontario Hockey League in 1973 and was drafted by the Buffalo Sabres in the second round of the 1975 NHL Amateur Draft.
Edwards made his NHL debut in the 1977-78 season, playing nine games for the Sabres. He quickly became known for his lightning-fast reflexes and ability to make impossible saves, earning him a reputation as one of the league's top goaltenders. In the 1980-81 season, Edwards played a pivotal role in the Sabres' successful run to the Stanley Cup finals, where they ultimately fell to the dominant New York Islanders. Edwards was named a finalist for the Vezina Trophy that year, awarded to the NHL's top goaltender.
After retiring from professional hockey in 1986, Edwards turned his focus to coaching, serving as the goaltending coach for several NHL teams, including the Buffalo Sabres, Calgary Flames, and Florida Panthers. He was also inducted into the Buffalo Sabres Hall of Fame in 1998, cementing his legacy as one of the greatest goaltenders to play for the team. Today, Edwards remains an influential figure in the hockey world, using his extensive experience and knowledge to help develop the next generation of goaltenders.
