Don Sweeney is a former professional ice hockey defenseman from Canada. He was born on August 17, 1966, in St. Stephen, New Brunswick, Canada. Sweeney started his hockey career at Harvard University, where he played college hockey for four seasons. Sweeney played for the Boston Bruins for 15 seasons, including being part of the team that reached the Stanley Cup Finals in 1989 and 1990. He was known for his solid defense and his ability to move the puck up the ice. Sweeney also played in the NHL All-Star Game in 1991. He retired from professional hockey in 2003 after playing for one season with the Dallas Stars.

After his retirement, Sweeney became an executive for the Boston Bruins. He was named Assistant General Manager in 2006, a role he held until 2015. In May of that same year, he was promoted to General Manager of the Bruins. Under his leadership, the team has made the playoffs in each of his first three seasons as GM. He has also made several significant trades and signings to improve the team's roster, including acquiring star forward Rick Nash.
