Doug Smail Autographs

Doug Smail was a Canadian professional ice hockey player who was born on February 14, 1957, in Moose Jaw, Saskatchewan. He began his hockey career in the Western Hockey League with the Saskatoon Blades in the 1973–1974 season. Smail was drafted by the Winnipeg Jets during the 1978 NHL Amateur Draft. He was initially sent to the team's Central Hockey League affiliate, the Tulsa Oilers, where he played 83 games and scored 89 points. He made his NHL debut during the 1978–1979 season, scoring his first NHL goal on October 15, 1978, in a game against the Los Angeles Kings.
Doug Smail played for the Winnipeg Jets for seven seasons and was a key member of the team during the 1980s. He helped the team reach the playoffs five times and was a consistent contributor on the ice, finishing his career with 267 goals and 373 assists in 691 games. Known for his speed and tenacity, Smail was a fan favorite in Winnipeg, where he was affectionately called "Smiley." He also represented Canada on two occasions, at the 1983 and 1986 World Championships, where he contributed to the team's bronze medal-winning efforts.
After leaving the Jets in 1987, Smail played one season for the Minnesota North Stars before retiring due to injury. He later worked as a hockey analyst for various media outlets, including TSN and the Winnipeg Jets Radio Network. Despite his relatively short NHL career, Doug Smail is remembered as one of the most beloved players in Winnipeg Jets history, and remains esteemed for his contributions on and off the ice.
