Emile Francis Autographs
Emile Francis was a Canadian-born professional ice hockey player and coach. Born on September 13, 1926, in North Battleford, Saskatchewan, he started his hockey career as a defenseman with the New York Rangers. Throughout his 10-year playing career, Francis played for the Rangers, the Chicago Black Hawks, and the Detroit Red Wings. Despite making it to the NHL All-Star Team twice, Francis saw more success behind the bench as a coach.
After retiring as a player in 1957, Francis became the head coach of the Providence Reds, a minor league team. He then became an assistant coach for the Rangers in 1962 before being promoted to head coach in 1965. Under his direction, the Rangers reached the playoffs for six consecutive years, including a trip to the Stanley Cup Finals in 1972. Francis' tenure as coach also saw the emergence of several Hall of Famers, such as Rod Gilbert and Brad Park.
Following his stint with the Rangers, Francis became the general manager and head coach of the St. Louis Blues. He set a record for winning the Jack Adams Award (given to the NHL's top coach) three times during his time as coach of the Blues. After a brief stint as an assistant coach for the New York Islanders, Francis retired from coaching with a career record of 345-286-139. Emile Francis was inducted into the Hockey Hall of Fame in 1982, cementing his legacy as one of the greats both on and off the ice.
