Vail's professional hockey career started in 1973 when he made his debut for the Houston Aeros. He became an instant sensation and was considered as one of the top prospects in the WHA. Vail's scoring prowess earned him the nickname “The Raging Bull” as he led the WHA in goals during the 1974–75 season. He was also selected to represent the WHA All-Star team in 1974, 1975, and 1976. In 1978, Vail was traded to the Atlanta Flames of the National Hockey League (NHL) where he continued to shine as a prolific scorer. Unfortunately, his career was cut short due to a knee injury and he retired in 1982.

Despite retiring early, Eric Vail's legacy as a hockey player lives on. He was inducted into the Manitoba Hockey Hall of Fame in 2009 and was honored as one of the Top 50 Atlanta Thrashers players of all time in 2011. Vail's career was short but impressive, and his impact on the sport is undeniable. His legacy will continue to inspire young, aspiring hockey players for generations to come.
