Evgeny Kuznetsov, born on May 19, 1992, in Chelyabinsk, Russia, is a professional ice hockey player for the Washington Capitals of the National Hockey League (NHL). Kuznetsov was a promising young player, and he began to draw attention after scoring the first-ever shootout goal in the KHL while playing for Traktor Chelyabinsk at just 17 years old. In 2010, Kuznetsov was drafted by the Capitals in the first round, 26th overall.
Kuznetsov initially remained in the KHL, playing for Traktor Chelyabinsk before moving to Sibir Novosibirsk for the 2013-2014 season. However, he made his NHL debut in March 2014 and joined the Capitals full-time the following season. Kuznetsov's first full season saw him score 11 goals and 26 assists in 80 games, earning him a nomination for the Calder Memorial Trophy as the NHL's rookie of the year.
As a center, Kuznetsov became an increasingly vital part of the Capitals' offensive power, especially in the playoffs. In the 2017-2018 season, he led the team in points with 83 (27 goals and 56 assists) and finished fifth in league scoring. Kuznetsov's strong performance in the playoffs helped lead the Caps to their first-ever Stanley Cup Championship. He tallied 12 goals and 32 points in 24 games, earning him the 2018 Conn Smythe Trophy as the most valuable player of the playoffs. Kuznetsov continued to be a key player for the Capitals in the following seasons, earning a reputation as one of the league's most creative and dynamic forwards.
