Fred Sasakamoose Autograph
Fred Sasakamoose was a Cree First Nations professional ice hockey player from Saskatchewan, Canada. He was born in March 1933, in Ahtahkakoop Cree Nation Reserve, Saskatchewan. Sasakamoose began playing hockey in his youth and soon developed into an exceptionally skilled player. He played junior hockey for the Moose Jaw Canucks and was later recruited to the Moose Jaw Canucks of the Western Hockey League for the 1953-54 season. In 1954, Sasakamoose joined the Chicago Blackhawks, becoming the first Indigenous Canadian to play in the NHL. During his time with the Blackhawks, Sasakamoose played in 11 games and scored 3 goals. Although his NHL career ended quickly, Sasakamoose continued to play in various leagues throughout his career, including the Western Hockey League and the American Hockey League. He was also a member of the Canadian National Team, representing Canada in international competitions. Sasakamoose played 11 seasons of professional hockey before retiring in 1961.
After his hockey career, Sasakamoose devoted himself to Indigenous advocacy work. He served as the Chief of Ahtahkakoop Cree Nation for a period and worked in Indigenous education and language revitalization. He was inducted into the Saskatchewan Sports Hall of Fame in 2007 and received the Order of Canada in 2018 in recognition of his contributions to hockey and his advocacy work.
