Garth Butcher Autographs
Garth Butcher is a former professional Canadian ice hockey defenceman. Born on October 8, 1963, in Regina, Saskatchewan, Butcher began his hockey career in the Western Hockey League (WHL), playing for the Kamloops Junior Oilers from 1980-83. He was a standout WHL defenceman, being named to the league's First All-Star team twice. After three seasons with Kamloops, Butcher was signed by the Vancouver Canucks of the National Hockey League (NHL) as a free agent in 1983.
Butcher played in the NHL for 14 years, playing for the Canucks, St. Louis Blues, Quebec Nordiques, and Tampa Bay Lightning. He was one of the most imposing defensive players of his time, known for his strong checking abilities and solid defensive play. He played a total of 897 regular season games, scoring 56 goals and 215 assists, and played in 47 playoff games, scoring two goals and six assists. Following his retirement from the NHL in 1998, Butcher became heavily involved in coaching, serving as an assistant coach for the Blues for five seasons and the Hamilton Bulldogs of the AHL for one season.
Despite his successful hockey career, Butcher is perhaps best remembered for his role in the infamous "Brawl in St. Louis" on March 22, 1987. Butcher, then a member of the Canucks, was involved in a massive bench-clearing brawl with the Blues that resulted in numerous suspensions and fines. The incident, viewed by many at the time as a black mark on the sport of hockey, is now considered a classic moment in NHL history. Butcher himself was ejected from the game and subsequently suspended for three games, but remained highly regarded for his tough and physical play on the ice.
