Gary Nylund Autographs
Gary Nylund was a Canadian professional ice hockey defenseman who played in the National Hockey League (NHL) for 12 seasons. He was born on October 28, 1963, in Surrey, British Columbia, and played junior hockey for the Portland Winter Hawks of the Western Hockey League (WHL) before being drafted 3rd overall in the 1982 NHL Entry Draft by the Toronto Maple Leafs. Nylund played seven seasons for the Maple Leafs, where he established himself as a hard-hitting defenseman with a powerful shot from the point.
In 1989, Nylund was traded to the Chicago Blackhawks, where he played three seasons alongside future Hall of Famers Chris Chelios and Denis Savard. He was a key member of the Blackhawks' 1992 President's Trophy-winning team and reached the Stanley Cup Final in 1992, where the Blackhawks were defeated by the Pittsburgh Penguins. Nylund finished his NHL career playing for the New York Islanders for two seasons before retiring in 1998. In total, he played 764 regular-season games, scoring 59 goals and 184 points, and had 1,460 penalty minutes.
Off the ice, Nylund struggled with substance abuse and was suspended several times by the NHL for drinking-related incidents. He battled addiction throughout his playing career and beyond, but eventually found sobriety and became an advocate for addiction recovery. Nylund passed away on August 10, 2021, at the age of 57 due to cancer. He is remembered as a hard-nosed defenseman who played with grit and determination and a dedicated teammate who always put the needs of the team first, both on and off the ice.
