Gus Bodnar was a Canadian Ice Hockey player who was born on October 14, 1923, in Fort William, Ontario, Canada. He was among the most gifted playmakers in the history of the sport. Bodnar began his career with the Toronto Maple Leafs in 1943, where he played for two years before moving to the Detroit Red Wings in 1945. Bodnar was a versatile player known for his exceptional playmaking abilities, and he was also a fierce competitor who could change the momentum of the game in a flash. His speed, stickhandling and brilliant sense of the game made him an elite talent. In his career, he played 614 regular-season games and amassed 109 goals and 248 assists for a total of 357 career points. After seven years with the Red Wings, Bodnar retired from professional ice hockey in 1952.

After his retirement from professional hockey, Bodnar remained involved in the sport as a coach, mostly at the junior level. He coached the Canadian national team to a bronze medal at the 1968 Winter Olympics in Grenoble, France. Before retiring from coaching, he held positions with numerous Canadian junior hockey teams. Gus Bodnar's contribution to the sport and his legacy as one of the best playmakers of his era still lives on, and he remains one of the most respected and beloved figures in the history of Canadian hockey.
